About

Michigan Citizens for Better Health exists to support and advocate for sound healthcare policies in Michigan.

MCBH is a coalition of private citizens supporting quality healthcare access and sound health-related public policy by educating citizens on a grassroots level. We serve as a strong and unwavering voice for healthcare in Michigan, raising awareness about policies that prioritize providing quality care to patients.

MCBH believes a healthier Michigan starts with supporting the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly in healthcare. This includes making sure patients in communities across the state have access to high quality healthcare, healthcare workers are protected from workplace violence and students have expanded opportunities to pursue healthcare careers.

At a time when Michigan’s healthcare workforce, one of the largest industries in Michigan, is experiencing shortages that are projected to continue to grow, it’s essential that healthcare professionals have advocates that support their autonomy and expertise.

While hospitals, policy makers and industry leaders are innovating to identify solutions for healthcare employee retention and recruitment, MCBH works to support the voice of healthcare professionals in those discussions.

As a result of the pandemic, healthcare workers are facing record levels of increased stress, burnout and violence on the job.

MCBH believes that policy makers play a vital role in protecting and supporting healthcare workers facing these physical and emotional challenges, including better supports on the job as well as penalties for those who seek to harm healthcare professionals.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that healthcare access and quality vary significantly based on geographic location, even within Michigan.

MCBH believes that one of the most important aspects of ensuring that Michigan residents can quickly and efficiently access high quality care within their own communities is through policies that support the expertise and autonomy of healthcare professionals.

MCBH works to raise awareness of the importance of local access to quality care, including policymakers who support expanding and continuing access to care, to ensure that Michiganders have access to the services they need in a timely and efficient manner.

Healthcare workers play a vital role in building and sustaining healthy communities through improved population health outcomes and lower healthcare costs.

For Michigan hospital and healthcare workers to continue to provide care throughout their communities, MCBH believes in policies that support the industry pipeline, invests in and protects workers, and allows them to practice with the autonomy and innovation needed to address individual community’s needs.

MCBH believes that recognizing and leveraging the evidence-informed local expertise of healthcare workers is key to addressing community-specific health challenges and achieving broader health goals and economic outcomes.

The individual needs of each community all contribute to the overall health of Michigan’s population and beyond, and healthcare workers need to be able to solve individual needs locally to contribute to better outcomes overall.
